Aesthetic: Earthy organic wedding

As a wedding florist, there is nothing quite like working with a couple who appreciates the beauty of nature and wants to infuse their special day with it. This was the case with the lovely bride and groom whose wedding we had the pleasure of working on at the stunning Appleford Estate in Villanova, PA. With rolling hills, lush greenery, and a beautifully restored colonial home, the estate made the perfect backdrop for our earthy and organic floral arrangements.

But this wedding design plan was not our first! Anastasia and Gerald’s wedding was supposed to be held in The Olde Bar in downtown Philadlephia, which was a completely different aesthetic. Due to the pandemic, the couple had to reschedule their wedding to an outdoor location. We went from the rich rustic interiors of the historic Bookbinder’s building to the sprawling and ethereal Appleford Estate. The estate has been around for over 300 years and has architectural and landscaping features that make it a unique backdrop for outdoor weddings.

One of the first things we noticed about Appleford was the stunning natural beauty of the surroundings that we knew we wanted to complement rather than clash with. Together with the bride and groom, we landed on greens, soft pinks, and cream color palette. We started by selecting a mix of locally grown and seasonal flowers, which always have an organic and natural feel. We included dahlias, roses, lisianthus, and lots of greenery in the arrangements, which balanced soft and delicate with an earthier texture.

Because the ceremony and reception was outdoors, we had to ensure that the arrangements wouldn't be too heavy or overpowering. Instead, we chose to keep them low and sprawling to create depth and texture.

For the reception, we created a mix of tall and low arrangements to add height and dimension to the space. We used steel boxes and added soft colored flowers and greenery with varying shades of green to create a cohesive and natural look. To add a bit of whimsy, we included lilies in the centerpieces.

We embraced this challenge and were thrilled with the result - the arrangements looked like they were meant to be in the outdoor setting all along.

Working on this Appleford Estate wedding was an absolute joy - there's something special about bringing extra flowers to an already stunning space and creating arrangements that reflect the natural beauty around us. From locally grown flowers to draping vines, we used organic elements to create an earthy and timeless feel.

We loved working with Anastasia and Gerald and hope to see the Appleford team soon!
